What is Portfolio?

Portfolio is an web-based information management tool designed to give students, faculty, and staff the opportunity to create and share their educational and professional records, as well as other supporting documents.  It is an online, integrated database where a variety of student records, work samples, and planning documents are electronically housed.

Available to all University students, faculty, and staff, Portfolio provides a dynamic, efficient mechanism for integrating official University and self-reported academic, career, and personal information.  Users can easily store, view, and selectively share this information with others anywhere, anytime via the web.

Portfolio provides an efficient way to document and reflect upon personal information, educational accomplishments, career goals, skills developments, professional practices, and recognition you have received.  You can retrieve and view your documents at any time and organize components of it into folders for others to access.  You can also view folders that other Portfolio owners have created for you.

Portfolio has three functions:

Enter Enter allows you to record and update informationand reflections about yourself, attach additional materials, and access your data in the University Administration System.

Share Share assists you in creating customized folders of selected information about yourself, previewing folders you plan to share with others at the U, and giving others access to folders you want toshare.

View facilitates your access to information that others at the University have shared with you and allows you to addcomments to additional materials they have allowed you to see.

Portfolio Organization

Portfolio is divided into six categories:

  • Personal Information
  • Education
  • Career
  • Skills
  • Professional Practices
  • Recognition

Each of the categories contains subcategories and elements, shown below, within which information is recorded and stored.  Most elements are self-reported text forms in which the useris prompted to enter certain information. It is up to the individual to complete these elements accurately.  An advantage of the self-reported elements is that the user can upload files and make one or more hypertext linksto any of the self-reported elements.

Portfolio Terminology

Element
Information either entered into Portfolio by the University Administration System or self-reported by the user.  Elements can contain "pointers" to various materials - documents, pictures, URLs,etc. - that are stored in the Manage Materials section.

Elements populated with information from the University Administrative System contain current, live information.

To accommodate the need for including a variety of documents, each Portfolio category has a Documentation element.  The Documentation elements can contain as many documents as you'd like in each section.
