Enter

This page describes how to put information into an element in Portfolio and how to attach a file or link to a web page.

Enter is your personal file for entering information and reflections and for attaching additional materials.  It allows you to enter your information by category. There are six categories, each of which contains a number of subcategories.  Some elements display data from the University Administrative System, and others display self-reported information.  The Portfolio Elements Map lists which elements are self-reported.

Logging into Portfolio

To log into Portfolio:

1.  Open a web browser and go to http://portfolio.umn.edu

  • You can log in as one of three types of users:
    • General User
      • Anyone with a University of Minnesota Internet ID and password
    • Advisor
      • Faculty or staff officially listed in Peoplesoft as an advisor to one or more students
    • Invited Guest
      • Someone outside the University of Minnesota system who has been invited to view a shared Portfolio presentation

2.  You will need to log into Portfolio using your University Internet ID and password.

  • If you need assistance logging in, contact your campus Help Desk or 1-HELP at (612) 301-4357.

3.  Once you have logged into Portfolio, you will see your name at the top of the screen.

Entering Information into Elements

Portfolio has many self-reported elements where you enter information into dialog boxes.

1.  Click on the Enter/Update Data link on the left side of your screen. You will see the six main categories where you can enter information.

  • Expand any category preceded by a plus sign to see elements where data can be entered.  A minus sign indicates the element cannot be expanded further.

2.  Click on the New button next to one of the subcategories,and enter the requested information.

3.  When you are done entering information, click Save Changes button at the bottom of the page.

Uploading Files

You can upload files and attach them to any of yourself-reported elements.

Note

You cannot attach a file to an empty element.  You must first enter the self-reported information into an element, as detailed beginning on page 7, before you can attach a file or URL to an element.

1.  Click on the Manage Materials link on the left side of your screen

3.  Navigate to the file you wish to upload and double-click on it

4.  Click on Submit to finish uploading the file to your Portfolio.

5.  Complete the requested information.  You are required to give the document a name, but the description and author are optional.  Remember to save when you are finished.

  • When a file has been successfully uploaded, it will show up in the UNFILED folder

Tip!

Adding a description to your uploaded documents helps to provide context for your materials, making them more meaningful to the people with whom you will share your Portfolio in the future.

Attaching Files to Elements

1.  Click on the Attach button next to the file you would like to attach

2.  Check the box for the element to which you would like to attach the file and save

  • When a file has been attached to an element, the name of the element will appear in the Attached To .... column.  You can attach a file to more than one element.

  • Each user has 5 GB of space for their data.

Linking to a Web Page

Attaching a URL is a very similar process to uploading a file.  Here's what you do:

1.  Click on the Manage Materials link on the left side of the page.

2.  Click on the Link to Web Page Link to Web Page button.

3.  Complete the information and save your changes.
