picture of a push pinwhat is podcasting?

Podcasting is a method of publishing audio files (in the form of MP3 files) to the Web. Podcasts are made available through subscription and are downloaded to personal computers and portable MP3 players for listening whenever its convenient. Apple's iPod is a very popular MP3 player, however, an iPod is not needed to subscribe and listen to podcasts.

what are some educational uses for podcasting?

Podcasting can be used whenever audio, particularly the human voice, and/or video will enhance student learning. Since many podcasts resemble radio-style broadcasts, they are commonly used for news and updates. However, since podcasting provides automatic updates to anyone who subscribes and allows for content to be synchronized to portable media players, it provides an easy means of delivering up-to-date content to students, for playback at any time or any place. Examples of how podcasting can be used include:

  • Audio journals
  • Literary readings
  • Student presentations
  • Guest lectures
  • Site tours or field work
  • Second language acquisition
