Google Apps Training

In preparation for the launch of Google Apps at the University of Minnesota, several training options are now available to help users with the transition. Whether you want to investigate how Google Apps might assist you in collaborating with your colleagues or just have a few questions about transitioning to Gmail – we have a training option for you.


Google Apps: Collaborating in the University Environment - Seminar, Hands-on, or Online

This 1.5-hour seminar or 3-hour, hands-on class provides a tour of the applications available with Google Apps for the University of Minnesota. This overview will demonstrate how to collaborate on a project with different people, and how the different applications are designed to facilitate collaboration. The overview will also identify some of the issues users may encounter with the transition to Google Apps, including efficiency tips and conceptual differences with other commonly-used software.

Topics include:

  • Organizing and finding messages in Gmail
  • Collaboratively authoring documents, spreadsheets, and presentations with Google Docs
  • Using Google forms to gather information
  • Chatting with individuals and groups using Google Chat
  • Using a Web site in Google Sites to organize a collaborative project

Registration for the seminar or hands-on course is required.

Google Apps Collaborative Learning Space

This web site provides an opportunity to learn about using Google Apps for collaboration as well as to share related resources. It can be used as a self-paced learning opportunity, or to look up how to get a specific task done.

The focus of this site is on using Google Apps in the University of Minnesota environment, but the activities and resources found here can apply to other environments.

Gmail: Making the Transition - Tech Learning Byte

This 20-minute informal session will include a brief overview of transitioning to Gmail, with the focus on answering participant questions.  Topics include:

  • Opting-in and the mail migration process
  • Using the Gmail web client
  • Accessing Gmail through a desktop client such as Outlook, Thunderbird, or Mac Mail
  • Understanding account limitations
  • Finding learning and support resources

This session is delivered at the Tech Stop in 101 Coffman Memorial Union. Registration required.

Google Apps Tutoring

Tech Tutoring provides an opportunity to schedule a 30-minute appointment with an instructor to learn specific skills or concepts for a project such as sharing documents with a group or collecting data with a form. Participants are encouraged to bring their project files as well as their laptop (if available).

Google Apps tutoring will take place at the Tech Stop in 101 Coffman Memorial Union. Appointments are required.
